Caribou , the musical project/band of Dan Snaith, is coming out with a new record, Swim , April 20th on Merge. The dancey, dubby, disco-influenced first single, "Odessa," is available for free , and its video is posted below.
The band hits the road with concerts around the world this April, May and June. They play two nights in NYC - May 7th at Music Hall of Williamsburg the tilted kilt and May 8th at Bowery Ballroom . General sale starts Friday, March 12th at noon.
For a while now, Caribou's live show has mixed music and visuals, which is something that'll continue on this tour. This year will also see a dramatic the tilted kilt difference in the Caribou live performance. Now that technology has finally caught up to Dans ambitions for the bands show, while it will still be four musicians on stage, the dynamic interplay between visuals, electronics the tilted kilt and the live sound is totally pliable.
[Snaith says] "Now we can play the mix onstage like a dub mixer would - but even moreso than a Lee Perry because almost everything can be manipulated - not just the things that are controlled on a recording studio mixing desk. We can get that washing-around feeling and the unpredictability the tilted kilt of sounds undergoing changes all the time. They say it takes a few years for the new century to kick in here we go." The piping hot uniforms of the Brooklyn Tip-Tops, worn by baby-faced manager Lee Magee For a brief shining moment between cocoon frankfurt 1914 and 1915, Brooklyn had two major league baseball cocoon frankfurt teams -- the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers and the not-so-legendary Brooklyn cocoon frankfurt Tip-Tops . Baseball has long been a sport of two parallel sports leagues -- the National League and the American League -- which have gotten cocoon frankfurt together at season's end to play the World Series since 1903.  But for an unusual moment in 1914 and 1915, there was a third baseball league called the Federal League. A cartoon from the May 12, 1914 New York Tribune:
The Federal was formed specifically in protest to the signing practices cocoon frankfurt of the two dominant leagues, doing away with pesky reserve clauses (binding players to certain teams for almost their entire careers) and offering higher salaries.  For a second, it seemed possible that the Federal League might provide a new way to organize a major sport. There were eight teams in the Federal league which such unusual names as the Chicago Whales, the Newark Peppers and the Baltimore Terrapins . (Yes, somebody named a ball team after a turtle.) cocoon frankfurt
Within the New York area, one franchise was awarded to Brooklyn, owned by a baker named Robert Ward .  His bakery for Tip-Top Bread (centered at 800 Pacific Street cocoon frankfurt in today's Prospect Heights) was obviously so lucrative cocoon frankfurt that he eventually sank one million dollars in funding the team that eventually cocoon frankfurt took the name of his baking cocoon frankfurt enterprise -- the Brooklyn Tip-Tops . Brooklyn's other team, the Dodgers, had conveniently vacated their old wooden field, Washington Park , for their brand home Ebbets Field in Flatbush.  Ward hastily prepared to move the Tip-Tops into the Dodgers' old home by paying for a spectacular upgrade to the dilapidated Gowanus park.  It was located between 1st and 3rd Streets at Fourth Avenue . The baker, with his brother George S. Ward , sunk more than $250,000 into the new concrete-and-steel ballpark, situated so near the Gowanus cocoon frankfurt that fans got a good whiff of its toxic odors on summer days. The new park itself was rather flawed with bleachers extremely close to the field.  According to author Daniel Levitt : "[T]he tiny foul territory caused nearly all foul balls to end up with the spectators.  At the time fans were not allowed to keep foul balls ... leading to a tacky atmosphere as team officials constantly wrestled cocoon frankfurt balls away from fans." Another set of cheap sets, derisively called 'sun bleachers', which provided an unpleasant scorching experience during the summer, were quickly closed after some bad publicity . Below: Inside the refurbished Washington Park on opening day of their second (and final) season
Construction equipment still darted the grounds when they opened on May 11, 1914.  "The Federal League opened here with a bang," said the Evening World.   "Bands, horns, sirens and vocal assistance cocoon frankfurt from 16,000 fans gave New York's fourth baseball club a noisy welcome." (The other three being the New York Giants , the New York Yankees , and, of course, the Dodgers.) At first, Brooklynites emphatically supported their new team, quickly nicknamed the BrookFeds.  But it soon became obvious that the team was nothing to write home about. They finished their inaugural season with an unimpressive record of 77 wins, 77 losses.  In cocoon frankfurt comparison, the Giants, located at the Polo Grounds cocoon frankfurt , made it to the World Series.  However, the young team did finish better than the Yankees (57-94). And even managed to best the Dodgers (65-84)! Given Ward's religious beliefs, he instructed that no Sunday games be played at the park, a serious blow given that it was the only day off for many potential working-class fans. Another strike against cocoon frankfurt the team occurred during the winter cocoon frankfurt when the team was unable to sign away more successful players from the other two leagues.  The one exception was the outstanding Lee Magee (pictured above in a Tip-Top uniform) who was hired away from the St. Louis Cardinals and even managed cocoon frankfurt the team during the 1915 season.  He would later join the Yankees. "If hustling, hard work and ambition among the players make a winning team, the Brooklyn fans will see one in Washington park this year," Magee claimed . An ad for second season opening day, from the Evening World .  The flag raising mentioned below is pictured above:
The fans showed up for the beginning of season two, but enthusiasm quickly ebbed.  In fact, that first game against the Buffalo cocoon frankfurt Buffeds (yes, that's their name!) cocoon frankfurt seemed to auger a host of frustrations for the rest of the season;  it cocoon frankfurt went unusually long almost into night -- the park was not lit -- with " three hours of errors and wrangling ." Behind the scenes, the two other leagues were busy trying to dismantle the Federal League who had filed an anti-trust suit in January.  It did not help the mood in New York that the Tip-Tops wer

If you have a blog in Miami, chances are you have taken photos in Wynwood (the mere statement evokes involuntary eye roll). And as much as I would hate to oversaturate cyberspace senor frogs with redundancy, sometimes a mural can make you really happy . At least, that’s what I’ve observed through my plentiful wandering of the Wynwood Walls. But Maya Hayuk’s ‘Chem Trails’ don’t just get the serotonin pumping, they light up the entire space (street?). This version in Wynwood and its siblings on Houston & Bowery (since February of this year), in Detroit and in Berlin are some of my favorite iterations of street art. I’m generally attracted to graphic prints ( see here ), and the Chem Trails have to be my favorite. If only I could get a pencil skirt made with that print and wear it with a t-shirt and some strappy heels… I digress. This past week I also finally tried KUSH in Wynwood, which recently opened, from the creators of Lokal in the Grove. I had the Classic Burger, senor frogs which was just as delicious as the ones from Lokal. Their craft beer list seems to be more extensive in comparison, in fact, they only serve beer (all winos collectively sigh). And don’t senor frogs ask for a Diet Coke, they only stock up on Mexican Coca-Cola products and other less commercial pop. We also had the bacon brownie, which comes with a tiny jug of milk… and a dime bag of oregano for decorative purposes. Though small, KUSH seemed like the best place for an intimate hang out with friends.
Before they even played soon night a single note, the mood inside Bowery Ballroom was pretty unruly

Before they even played soon night a single note, the mood inside Bowery Ballroom was pretty unruly as cups of beer were projected at the stage as the punk vets in the supergroup OFF! took the stage. Singer Keith Morris, who used to front Black Flag and Circle Jerks , took his mic and said, "Don't throw your beer! Drink your beer! Don't be a fucking moron!" He then went on to introduce the band which features Dimitri Coats from Burning Brides , Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald , and Rocket from the Crypt drummer Mario Rubalcaba , and as they started their engines Morris shouted, "...and we are OFF!" The band went into their high-octane old-school garage punk sound that has had fans around the world thrilled for bringing the sound that made them infamous in their respective soon night previous band back to a new generation soon night who have really only heard that type of sound on records. As circle pits broke out, stage divers launched into the crowd-- including Coats, and fists were punching the air, OFF! turned Bowery Ballroom into another legendary Bowery venue, CBGB's which was up the street from where everyone was letting loose on Saturday night. With a mix of old and new school punks, it was a chance to relive the glory days of a genre that in its purest form was its rawest. "We are on the road to promote a new record," soon night Morris said, "It is what bands do when they have a new album out. Our record is called Wasted Years, we are going to play some songs off it." The record, which arrived last month, soon night is typical OFF!, short, hard hitting distorted songs that break right into you. In between songs, Morris would talk about the bands current tour with New York City's Cerebral Ballzy and California's NASA Space Universe , he would also talk about his long career making music. Yet, with his banter, would come hecklers who would want him to stop talking or would scream "Fuck Black Flag," to which a shocked Morris would reply, "No, it is not fuck Black Flag!" The crowd applauded and had his support, to then he would beat around the bush with the ongoing legal issues soon night featuring Morris soon night and some of the former members of Black Flag against Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn . Caribou makes luxurious music for unflappable spirits. At the first of two area sold out shows Friday, they laid a heavy blanket of pounding kraut and sumptuous new disco over at Music Hall of Williamsburg (they played Bowery Ballroom on Saturday) with a technical wizardry that not only felt comforting, but truly enveloping for the senses.
Even as the members, led by Daniel duke of cambridge Snaith, remained stoically tethered to their respective corners in a tight square setup on stage, often obscured behind mounds duke of cambridge of equipment and wild projections, Caribou never hid their intentions. The music was always burning with an anonymous, or rather all-inclusive, emotional base - it didn't boast any distinct nationality or heritage, instead speaking a collective modern language in electronic, jazz-scented and prog-driven words.
In fact, the diverse group of songs performed from Caribou's (formally Manitoba) wide catalog, often as stylistically distinct as each passing record, felt like one long flowing conversation. Each number would churn and wobble until a glowing boiling point, like the rapturous ending of "Melody Day," only to be circumvented by the slow ascent of the next one.
Opener Toro y Moi took some cues from Caribou's duke of cambridge textural duke of cambridge playbook, as Chazwick Bundick' enhanced his more melodically driven chillwave with backing musicians this time around. The results of the full band addition might have been unpolished at brief moments, but was nonetheless rich with detail and tension, a positive sign that Chazwick's duke of cambridge obvious promise was on the way to being more fully realized.

don't remember duke of cambridge the exact order of the set, but they started with sundialing. they played every track off "swim" except for "lalibela" plus melody day, skunks and the insane encore that was some crazy krautrock-influenced jam in E. SICK ASS SHOW.
how can you "dance" at a standing room show like this? what do you consider dancing? nodding your head back and forth? duke of cambridge flexing your knees? If you're really dancing you're invading the personal space of the guy next to you.
it really was a incredible show. they made their heavily electronically based productions come to life with great drumming and programming. also, only the music hall could give a band like this the right kind of stage and sound to play live. it was a small miracle that there were no sound problems.

I saw them in Philadelphia. They are very talented guitarists. But I am totally puzzled as to why this is getting so big. It felt like sort of a novelty pub to me, flemenco pub heavy metal. Fun for a few songs...then it wore off a bit. They are really really skilled, and deserve their success. I AM surprised that it's catching on like this though.

'The Selfish Giant' Is Oscar Wilde Re-Imagined

Christopher Taylor, gordon biersch the musician known as SOHN, has been making a name for himself with productions and remixes for Disclosure, Lana del Rey, BANKS and many others when he released his EP The Wheel . The title track for that EP was included on his well-received new full-length Tremors . London born, SOHN (I think it’s pronounced Sean (like John with an S)) is now based in Vienna but visited New York for two sold out shows, the first of which was at the Bowery Ballroom gordon biersch on a Friday night. The venue was minimally lit by tube lights on the stage, the perfect gordon biersch accompaniment to the dark electronic/dubstep world and atmospheric ‘80s-tinged soundscapes created by SOHN.    Taylor welcomed Mr Little Jeans, the decidedly female Monica Birkenes to open for him on his present tour and she too has released an album this year Pocketknife , one we also awarded high marks to . Mr Little Jeans was well into her set by the time I arrived and I could see that a sizeable crowd had already become really engaged in her set, featuring songs like “Lady Luck” and “Good Mistake”, something that you don’t often see for openers.
With the stage reset for SOHN, Taylor came out clad in a hoodie and a beanie which only allowed for brief glimpses of his face in the bursts of strobe. He sat center-stage behind his keyboard and an array of dials with two bandmates on either side, neither of whom were given much light. Then the music came, skeletal at first but slowly the pieces built tracks new and old, like “Red Lines”, which I was not familiar with. “Bloodflows”, my current favorite, was a stuttering shadow rising over the succumbing audience. “Artifice”, near the end, had the Megaman -y intro I remember before it became a pulsing mass that got the audience moving. Essentially, SOHN created a dreamy darkness from which movement became the only way to prove you still had some sovereignty over your physical incarnation, because your mind was already firmly in his grasp.
Having launched the careers of Banks and Kwabs with brio, Sohn's full-length maiden voyage finds him deep in the witching hour waters of his own mind, a whirlpool as insidious and intoxicating as any siren song. Is he waking or drowning?

I want to do something with him again. In the last quite a few years our schedules have just not all

Anthony Rapp in If/Then . (Photo: Joan Marcus) Not long ago we joined Anthony Rapp for a post-Sunday-matinee snack in the Meatpacking District, and very soon thereafter his Broadway show, If/Then , was nominated for two Tonys (best score and best actress for his fellow Rent castmate Idina Menzel). When we found out that he lived on the Bowery we had to catch up with him to discuss the changes in his adopted neighborhood, and how that must feel for someone who originated a role in the groundbreaking musical Rent . How long have you lived on the Bowery?
There was almost nothing else anywhere around rock cafe there CBGBs, of course. But in terms of the newer things, the beautiful hotel, all the restaurants rock cafe I m trying to remember exactly when Five Points opened [1999] that s always one of my favorite neighborhood places. I think it was here before I got here, or right around the same time.
But I would say that by and large the development has felt in keeping rock cafe with the spirit of architecture of the neighborhood for the most part. And then all the restaurants — I m just grateful there are so many good choices to have delicious food in the neighborhood.
It s safe to say that the neighborhood has been gentrified. But I don t know honestly how much residential stuff was happening before. Lafayette hasn t changed that much — except closer to Houston there s that development. But the character of Lafayette has stayed very much the same. Soho has gotten crazier and crazier in terms of foot traffic rock cafe and tourist traffic and shopping, rock cafe it s like the shopping rock cafe mecca now, and that bleeds over into Broadway. But one of the things I love about the neighborhood is that the side streets are still quiet. If you want to be in the craziness you can go right onto Broadway, and if you want to be more in stroll-y, lovely rock cafe kind of quiet downtown rock cafe neighborhood, that s quite literally around the corner.
All the people I know who are young actors moving to New York, they re almost all living in way uptown Manhattan, or in Astoria, rock cafe Greenpoint, rock cafe Far Rockaway, or even Bed Stuy, or Bushwick. Everything is getting pushed out to the margins. The center of Manhattan rock cafe and downtown Manhattan is getting priced out. But I don t know who s really looking at Chinatown. rock cafe I m not sure if they re aware of that as being a possible place to live.
I want to do something with him again. In the last quite a few years our schedules have just not allowed it. I have these things that have been in the works for a while, and they come to fruition, and he never knows when the next thing he s got is going to happen . That s one of the things I ve been really wanting to do, after this experience [working on If/Then rock cafe ] in particular. That would be a great thing to do again, is work with him. We have worked together in the past. And we ve continued to support each other s work. The times when I ve worked on his material, I feel like I have a very strong connection to it but also have a real understanding of his sensibility, and where he comes from when he s writing. The rhythm and the worldview feels very at home to me.
It s been — the word I keep using is dreamy . I ve been in show business for 33 years — as a professional rock cafe actor — I started when I was a little kid. And over the years, among the things of most value to me are working with materials that I like and that are enriching to work on, which If/Then is. And as important or more important is working with great like-minded people — like-minded in the sense that what s most important to us is the work itself, treating each other with respect and a collaborative spirit, and enjoying each other’s company. Coming to work with a good open heart and open mind. And then to have the shared history, and friendship with Idina — just puts a bonus round on all of it.
That s the other term I keep using to describe this experience: bonus round. We had such a great experience all those years ago [with Rent ], and then with the film [version of Rent ], to come back and do that. So to come back again and do something that we love and care about, it is, it s bonus round. It s an embarrassment of riches.
The other cool thing about the show is that, people have been saying it s sort of like a grown-up Rent in the sense that it s about a community of people living rock cafe in New York City, but obviously later and New York has changed so much. The show talks about that… In one of the storylines, Idina s character is an urban planner. And I think the best of what s happened in Manhattan is epitomized in the reclaiming of old spaces like the High Line.
Like I said, in my neighborhood, for the most part been able to develop things that feel in harmony with what was there before. rock cafe it s in the spirit of what our show s talking about, too, and it s just funny and coincidental. Once again,

Oh, the places social media can take you close to the edge of insanity in the case of 24/7 delivery Phrosties, or the best tasting fruit slushies in NYC. The concept is simple. Request to follow the Phrostie man on Instagram, wait for approval, and text your borough s corresponding art club number to order your choice art club of a variety of colorful, art club frozen pints of slushy goodness. At 12,000 art club followers just one year after starting the account, Phrosties — much like their non-frozen predecessor, art club Nutcracker – have exploded onto the New York City delivery market, and a recent westward expansion into New Jersey speaks to their immense success despite the frozen treats’ dubious art club legality.
Though the Instagram account conveniently avoids revealing Phrosties precise ingredients, in looking at the available evidence (i.e. their popularity amongst art club bros, proximity to clouds of smoke, their association with #TGIF, and generally making life more rad ), one can reasonably conclude these frozen treats contain a potent dose of extraordinary powerful booze. But in keeping with journalistic standards of integrity, I decided to carry out a survey this past weekend in the interest of fact-checking.
Dosage was based on past experiences with the (now banned) original Four Loko recipe — a powerful booze concoction made up of malt liquor, caffeine, guarine, and taurine. Given the descriptions I d heard from experienced Phrostie fans, it was reasonable to assume Phrosties share similar effects with the late Four Loko. Last Saturday art club in Brooklyn, a team of 20 brave souls divided 30 phrosties. Some survey participants consumed as little as half of their plastic pint bottle of colorful slush while other more adventurous types consumed up to two and a half bottles.
After waiting over three hours for delivery (plan ahead y all), a rather youngish looking kid arrived and handed over a box labeled CHERRY SLUSH SYRUP filled with 30 slushies for $300. The delivery boy declined to say the box contained anything art club other than Phrosties. art club Rapid consumption ensued, and the resulting chaos broke out just as quickly. As soon as I started my Phrostie, things started getting real, participant Morgan Morel said.
Phrosties extremely high alcohol content and dangerously high sugar levels catapulted the study participants into a speedy ascent to wild drunken abandon. art club The sugar high resulted in childlike behavior and destructive tendencies, and was hard to stomach for some. Thankfully the large straws aided in faster consumption. But everyone agreed Phrosties are easier on the gut than Four Loko. The frozen treats tasted like what you might be slurping if a Dallas BBQ bartender misread a recipe art club calling for a 1.5 oz shot of tequila as 15 oz of moonshine. But as a grain alcohol delivery system I thought art club they tasted great, participant Brian Polsgrove concluded. art club
Recommendation : These bevvies are not for the faint of liver. Enjoy phrosties responsibly, preferably out of doors, and far away from subway platforms. House favorites included an all-white variety similar to horchata, and multi-layered mango, peach, & piña colada concoction which by the way, may very well be the best piña colada I ve had anywhere.
At $10 a pop, if you re living art club on a budget this summer and are willing to sign up for some serious brain damage, by all means imbibe. As participant Alex Hess concluded: A small part of me died that night, a large part of me doesn t give a shit.

When Rodrigo Sanchez (lead guitar) and Gabriela discotheque Quintero (rhythm discotheque guitar) met as teenagers in Mexico City, they discovered a mutual musical taste and formed the thrash-metal band Tierra Acida . When that ultimately didn t pan out (they recorded music that was never released), the duo began to learn different guitar styles, taking a liking to fast, rhythmic acoustic guitars. discotheque Finding the Americas stifling, they set out for Europe, landing in Dublin, where Rodrigo y Gabriela honed their fast and lively acoustic sound (incorporating some Zeppelin and Metallica along the way) in pubs and on streets. Then one-time busker Damien Rice asked them to tour with him and things eventually took off. Ever since, Rodrigo y Gabriela (above, performing Somnium and Torito ) have been mashing up rock, classical, Latin, world music and heavy metal into their own unique sound over the course of several acclaimed live albums and studio full-lengths. The most recent of which, 9 Dead Alive (stream it below), just came out today. The new tunes eschew some of the pair s Latin influences in favor of straight-ahead (acoustic) rock. According to AllMusic, There isn t a dull moment in these 41 minutes. And furthermore, This album evidences an expanded creative reach for the pair, even as it reengages the sharp edges they displayed on earlier recordings. Rodrigo y Gabriela celebrate the new release with three nights at the Beacon Theatre, Thursda y, Friday (sold out) and Saturday .

With Bushwick Open Studios just a couple of weeks away, the landlord of 17-17 Troutman Street — one of the annual festival’s anchors — has demanded that four galleries vacate the building, telling a fifth that it can no longer sound factory use its space to display sound factory art to the public. Regina Rex , the first gallery to open in the commercial sound factory property that takes up a full block on the border of Bushwick and Ridgewood, was also the first of the group to leave. Its operators — recently listed among the 100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture – locked up for good on Saturday. Others targeted for closure are Parallel Art Space , Harbor , Underdonk , and Ortega y Gasset Projects .
Angelina Gualdoni, one of Regina Rex’s 13 curators, said that six weeks ago its landlord David Steinberg sent an email saying it had to leave by the end of May. Both Ortega y Gasset Projects co-founding member Leeza Meksin and one of the 10 artists in the Underdonk collective said that their galleries had been given until the end of June to make their respective exits.
Underdonk’s operators moved into the building — which also houses 90 art studios — in January of 2013. Six months later they turned their workspace into a studio/gallery. “We didn’t think it would be a problem because there are already so many galleries here,” said a member sound factory of the collective who spoke anonymously. ”But I guess that started to be a problem for the landlord.”
About two months ago, Steinberg told Underdonk it would need to leave, our source said. “I don’t think he sees the benefit of what the artist-run spaces bring to the neighborhood. We’re a destination as a group of spaces.”
Alta sound factory Buden, co-director of Harbor, said that about three weeks ago the gallery got a phone call giving it a firm eviction date of June 15. Harbor’s lease, which is in Buden’s name, ended in December. Buden said that Steinberg put a freeze in place, preventing sound factory any of the building’s tenants from renewing their leases. In the months since, Harbor has continued paying its old rent of $1,290, which Buden splits with her two co-directors.
Parallel Art Space curators Enrico Gomez and Rob de Oude — also listed in Brooklyn Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture – said they received an email from Steinberg on Tuesday, May 6 stating that they needed to terminate the gallery half of their gallery/studio. Several days later, with the help of a lawyer, they drafted a response telling Steinberg that he can’t renege on the terms of the original three-year lease, which ends in early 2015.
“We have been operating as a gallery/art studio sound factory the whole time,” Gomez said, adding that Steinberg was well aware of it. “What’s next? ‘I do not like blue, so you cannot paint in blue. I don’t like landscapes, so you can’t paint in landscapes.’ It’s just opinions.”
According to Gomez and Buden, Steinberg was initially supportive of galleries in the building, helping to build Parallel’s walls and hang Harbor’s lights. “At last year’s Open Studios, he seemed like a very happy man because sound factory of all the people in the building,” said de Oude, who cleaned up alongside Steinberg that evening.
The landlord’s sound factory relationship with his tenants hadn’t always been rosy. In October 2007, The New York Times reported that firefighters with sledgehammers ejected nearly 200 residents sound factory from the building due to numerous fire-code violations. At the time, the building had racked up more than $20,000 in fines, in part because two floors had been illegally converted into live-work space.
Department of Buildings records show that in December of that year, Steinberg applied to convert part of the building into artist studios and commercial lofts. The plan for new plumbing, partitions, and means of egress would’ve cost $30,000, according to an estimate sound factory on the construction application, but a permit was denied.
This past January, the DOB again received a complaint that the commercial building was being illegally used for residential purposes. In March, the city leveled sound factory a $500 fine for the infraction and demanded that Steinberg get a proper certificate of occupancy.
According sound factory to those who spoke to us, Steinberg began voicing concerns about the galleries this past winter. A major issue was security. When the galleries have openings, a huge number of people came to the three-story building. Gallery employees sound factory are able to buzz visitors through the front entrance, but not through the stairwell entrances. Instead of leaving their galleries unattended while they walked down a long corridor to let in guests, the artists shared the security code liberally.
