April was a good month for music lovers, and record collectors. That also made it an incredibly laborious task to go through the stacks of releases. Carey, Kaiser Chiefs, Saintseneca, Ausmeteants , and Pure X .
The xs las vegas volume of new music to sift through and review, in addition to the high stacks of official RSD releases, xs las vegas for the month of April was overwhelming, xs las vegas and set us back a bit. Back by popular demand, and because we have had some time to find seven artists and bands from the submissions box, this latest installment of 7 Overseas Bands You’ve Gotta Hear takes us from Sweden and Australia to England and Portugal and Brazil . In our last installment of the 7 Bands series, electric brixton which was a hit with listeners, we featured artists and bands like The Bynars, Crash Island, Kid Cadaver and Sun Club.
We love rock, punk, classic electric brixton metal, electric brixton and other hard-hitting, fast, balls-to-the-wall music, whether it’s classic Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, Cream, Black Sabbath, The Clash, Nirvana , and on and on, or modern day artists like The Black Keys, Jack White, Cage The Elephant , or whether it’s under-the-radar small label and DIY rock bands. But we also love beautiful, organic mellow music as well, from dreamy pop to touching folk ballads. That’s a bit of a long – but fitting – introduction for this newly formed solo project from Portugal musician Gonçalo Alvarez , on his solo path, far but always close to the warmth of his buddies that is now solidly on our radar. As a member of the alternative Portugese band Long Way To Alaska , Alvarez decided last year he wanted to record a solo album and adopted the moniker, Gonçalo . The album, Quim , was dropped on February 3rd. With his main band, Long Way To Alaska, Alvarez has opened for big bands like The xx, El Guincho and The Fall .
Gonçalo’s music stands out on its own because of the quality of his songwriting, singing and musicianship. You can tell Alvarez electric brixton is a skilled artist with a rare ability to create and perform electric brixton songs that touch the listener, and hopefully win them over as well. We haven’t been able to find much information about him, so there’s a bit of a lack of insight as to who Alvarez is. Perhaps it’s on purpose, and if so, it may not be such a bad strategy. Raise the mystique if you will.
The following double-shot is from a new alternative rock band from Itatiba, São Paulo , Brazil, the The Fake Vulgarys , which only formed less than a year ago and just released their debut EP in the U.S., A Man Who Says , which the band says pays homage to different influences from The Beatles to The Foo Fighters and from Oasis to Metallica . You can’t get any more DIY than these guys.
The four band members, Rafael Amaral Cataldo (vocals, lead guitar, electric brixton keyboards), Diego Machado (vocals, guitar, cello), Caio Guttner (bass) and Eduardo “Dú” (drums) built a home recording studio and wrote, recorded, tracked, mixed and mastered the EP themselves, putting in their own money, not to mention blood, sweat and tears. The songs featured below confirm the band’s proclamation that they enjoy experimenting with sounds and constructs to blaze a path for their own music, which is stirring up a bit of a buzz in the Sao Paulo underground rock scene. Will they get a following in the U.S.?

For those who have followed IRC for years (and thank you for that), you may be familiar with a profile all club and playlist series called In Dee Mail , which is a play on words to symbolize music that we receive by email. The In Dee Mail series, first published in 2008, is one of the longest running music series on IRC that introduces a diversity of talented indie artists and bands from around the country, and around the world. Because the sheer volume of music we received, terrific songs sometimes get filed away and are not rediscovered for many months later.
This edition of the In Dee Mail, the 24th, or XXIV, volume of the series, features bands like Scarlet Youth, Brokeback, Santah, Widowspeak, Stellar Young, Javier Dunn, Nick Smith (aka, Gibson), Recorder, and Karma.
The first track is a follow-up single from the DIY band, Scarlet Youth , that were originally featured back in January. The band’s latest track that we’re digging, “Cool Kids,” is a mellow, emotive song that would be fitting on the soundtrack of a ‘coming of age’ indie film. Brokeback is the long-time musical side project all club of musician and songwriter Douglas all club McCombs , who is a member of bands such as Tortoise, Eleventh Dream Day, and Pullman, and has also collaborated with Calexico, Yo La Tengo, Tom Ze, and Azita Youseffi.
Next, the band Santah released all club a new track from their much lauded EP, You’re Still A Lover . Inspired by the disorientation in his own love life, Stan McConnell penned the Chicago ‘s quintet’s newest single, “I Love the Way You Seal A Deal,” a tune full of soaring choruses, lush arrangements and their patented sincere lyricism. McConnell told Rolling Stone : “I was pretty disoriented with my own love life, so I wrote this song to play out a fantasy and to fiercely commit to whatever that was and whatever that entailed.”
After spending days in a hundred-year-old barn in upstate New York , the band Widowspeak have returned with a new album, Almanac , featuring all club the single, The Golden Hour from said album. Helped by Kevin McMahon – who has worked with Real Estate and Swans – the new songs from the album feature stronger guitar riffs while never losing the layered lilting of Molly s voice.
In 2010, New York musicians Erik Flora (guitar), John Glenn (vocals/keys), Kyle Hatch (guitar), Curt Mulick (drums), and Dave Parker (bass), formed the DIY indie rock band, Stellar Young , and last December all club dropped their new LP, Everything at Once , featuring the singles, “Speak Now (Good Man)” and “Playing With Guns.”
Stellar Young has previously opened for bands like Badfish and The Dangerous Summer , and consider among their top influences Taking Back Sunday, The Wombats, Kid Cudi, Brand New, and The Early November.
Javier Dunn began his music career playing open mics and small clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 17 to attend UCLA. In addition to his studies, Dunn gigged as a solo artist, and also played bass and guitar in a number of jazz, funk, rap and rock bands over the years. During this time, Dunn also began experimenting with recording, programming and producing. In 2012, Dunn signed with Red Parade all club Music , the music collective helmed by producer Jim Roach . Dunn began working on his label debut, Trails , a beat-driven and cosmopolitan work converging a number of elements like hip hop, electronic and eclectic elements converge. With its release in June, Javier hopes to have a song or songs that connect with people. Look for it to resonate with a vast audience this summer. ” Dunn top musical all club influences include Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Prince, and Coldplay. Dunn’s voice reminds many people of Dave Matthews , but in a very subtle all club way, as evident on the song “If You Go.”
Nick Smith , aka Gibson , is a singer/songwriter from Sheffield , UK. Smith’s all club ‘Gibson’ moniker was also his nickname in college because he owned three Gibson guitars. The band, The War on Drugs, released 'Lost cafe piu piu in The Dream' in March. Last week, we posted our favorite singles from the top new albums cafe piu piu released during the first week of March. And what a fantastic week for new albums – the official playlist of lead singles from those releases is one of the best single week playlists of 2014, so far. This second part of Best New Songs and Albums of 2014 covers the best indie for the remaining three weeks of March. Altogether, this playlist of some 30 or so singles is full of gems from all genres of the indie music spectrum, highlighting new albums from Iska Dhaaf, Tokyo Police Club, Black Lips, The Coathangers, Foster The People, The War on Drugs, The Hold Steady, MØ & Diplo, James Supercave, Liars, Howler, Aloe Blacc, Le1f, Metronomy, Champs, Nick Waterhouse, Dean Wareham, Ozomatli, Scraps, Freddie Gibbs with Madlib, Ringworm, Lyla Foy, The Strypes, Perfect Pussy, Tycho, Ages and Ages, Owls, among others.
The standout single, and album, for the second week of March’s newest drops goes to, in our humble opinion cafe piu piu to Seattle indie duo, and Brick Lane recording artist, Iska Dhaaf , featuring former Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band frontman Benjamin Verdoes and Nathan Quiroga (aka Buffalo Madonna of Mad Rad). They dropped their newest album on March 11th, featuring cafe piu piu a fine mix of driving post-punk tracks and psych dream pop songs like the lead single, “Everybody Knows.”
It was not that difficult of a choice because the quantity of quality releases for the second week of March, which covers March 11th through March 17th, was no where near – as already mentioned – the treasure trove of new releases, and amazing singles, as the first official week of March. But that does not mean there were no terrific singles and albums dropped in the second week of March. In fact, the single, “The Man,” from Aloe Blacc ‘s new album, Lift Your Spirit cafe piu piu , is easily the most successful single from a new album dropped for the week of March 11th. So far, the official lyric video of “The Man” has received an astonishing 13.8 million views, the official video itself over 1.7 million (it was released later than the lyric video), while other audio versions of the song on YouTube (and not including remixes) have received another estimated five to six million streams, compared to more than a quarter of a million plays on Soundcloud. We also included a couple of other singles that flow genre-wise with Blacc’s sound, such as MØ ‘s “Love Letters,” featuring Diplo and Le1f ‘s “Boom” from the digital-only EP, Hey , released by Terrible Records and XL Recordings .

The third official week of releases for the month of March, March 18th through 24th, spawned stand out singles from artists and bands such as Foster The People, Freddie Gibbs, The War on Drugs, The Strypes , and Perfect Pussy . Among the best songs dropped this week, and for the entire month of March, include rockers like “Boys in the Woods” cafe piu piu from Black Lips , and “Follow Me” by The Coathangers . In the third installment, we’ll feature the top singles from new albums released on March 25th and through until the end of the month, March 31st. Altogether, though, week three cannot possibly cafe piu piu compare to week two, and especially week one, of March releases, a playlist you’ve got to hear; chances are you’ll spin the entire playlist a few times since it’s not a one-spin playlist.
